Netherton House is a beautiful 17th century house that was purchased in 2014, (as a disused office premises), by the Fisher family, who actually lived in the premises 50 years ago when it was their family home. They have rescued the roof from collapse and restored the frontage and repainted the exterior of the building to protect the woodwork. Unfortunately the previous owner had left the interior as a 1970’s style office building, but we have transformed it back into the 17th Century and into a stunning 60 seat restaurant, serving freshly prepared food and beverages.
Netherton House is located in a central location of the thriving village of Long Stratton, on the main A140 road from Diss to Norwich. Long Stratton is an ever growing village with plans to extend the village by building a further 1,800 homes. The village has several busy take-away outlets but now has a warm, friendly, welcoming restaurant in which diners can enjoy quality, locally sourced food, at affordable prices. This should benefit the local community as there are no other restaurants within a 5 mile radius.
Since planning permission was granted the internal layout of the building has been improved significantly, removing poor quality stud walls and decor and replacing it with new heating, lighting and new toilet facilities befitting a quality establishment. But at the same time we have re-instated some of the beauty of the house that was lost when it was converted many years ago. We have opened up the some of the glorious rooms the building has to offer and brought them back to their former glory, making the most of what this building has to offer.
The interior of the building has been designed to be as accessible for disabled customers as possible. There is a newly fitted commercial kitchen, cellar and small bar area for diners whilst awaiting their table. The upstairs has been partly transformed into living accommodation (for management only), whilst the largest first floor room has been restored to its former splendour and opened up as an elegant function/ dining room overlooking the rear garden. The furniture is not only designed to suit the decor and character of the building, but to give it a warm cosy feel. The rear of the building is being transformed into a lovely garden with tables and chairs for outdoor summer dining.
We are proud that not only is all of our food to be sourced locally, but all of the main contractors who completed the work for us also live locally. We hope you will come in and appreciate their skill and workmanship.
The restaurant will provide dishes and flavours from around the world. The idea is to appeal to a diverse clientele from not only Long Stratton but also the surrounding area. All of the dishes will be prepared using fresh, locally sourced produce from local suppliers, thus helping to promote as many local businesses as possible. On the daily changing menu will be dishes such as pasta, Thai, local fresh fish, warm hearty steak pie using seasonal locally sourced game. Right through to a simple scone with chef's jam in the garden on a summers day, all dishes will use fruits and vegetables that are currently in season.
The restaurant will be open seven days a week, Monday to Sunday lunch and Monday to Saturday evening, serving quality food at reasonable prices. There are several dining rooms with warm cosy decor, calm lighting, fresh flowers and gentle background music. There will also be a glorious additional dining room upstairs, with country house theme touches, which can be hired for special occasions.
During the summer period, people will be able to enjoy a relaxed atmosphere in the private walled garden. Whether it is a crisp pint of cider in the sun with a Ciabatta, or a light bite from the chef’s special summer menu, it will be a secure, safe place for all the family. We will have our own Barbeque and Wood Fired Oven in the garden for an extra touch on Bank Holiday Sunday afternoons. The garden will also be available for wedding or family functions, and charity organised events.
The service will be relaxed, friendly but professional, with a warm welcome for all. We will use mainly local staff, bringing more employment to the village. We will train, motivate and encourage and reward them, therefore providing a very happy and strong team of staff, ready to look after diners needs.
We aim to offer an excellent quality of service for all the family, within a warm environment, ensuring the family restaurant will serve the community for many years. We will have occasional themed evenings, regular promotions and intend to introduce a loyalty card system.
Throughout my career I have been lucky enough to work alongside some fantastic chefs and business owners and have gained respect for and from members of staff at all levels. Some of whom I still work along-side to help them when I can and also keep my skill sets fresh and varied. I have built great relationships with people and learned and taught many skills in the hospitality and catering trade. I now feel that I have achieved a position of respect amongst my peers.
I am able to combine the modern dining experience with traditional values and prefer to cook all dishes from raw ingredients. This does not just mean fresh vegetables and pastry but home-made bread, jam, chutney, pasta, mayonnaise etc. the list is endless but all adds to the taste of the food that is presented to the diner.
Director & Head Chef
I am proud to put my name to this project. When we were first shown the building early in 2015, both my fellow director Craig Grant and I could see the potential and need for a quality but affordable restaurant in the area. It has been a daunting task to transfer an outdated office building into a beautiful restaurant and there have been numerous hurdles to climb over, with the building being Grade 2 listed, but we believe we now have something everyone will enjoy. Having lived in the village for over 16 years it will be wonderful to have somewhere to eat good food, locally. Craig has been part of the family for several years now and we can certainly vouch for his culinary expertise.
My main business is that of a director of an investment based Independent Financial Advisor firm in Norwich, Asset Investment Management Ltd (www.asset-im.co.uk), which will continue to run completely separately. I have run several successful businesses over the last 25 years both in Norfolk and the Midlands and am looking forward to this new venture. Craig will be the General Manager of Netherton House Restaurant and Garden and I will oversee the financial side, but living so close I am sure I will be there quite regularly.
